Investing in our future: White House honors Dr. T. Berry Brazelton :: Investing in our future means investing in our children.
That's the message that Boston Children's renowned pediatrician T.Berry Brazelton wants everyone to hear, loud and clear.
Brazelton was one of 11 individuals from Head Start programs around the country who was honored by the White House on June 18th as a "Champion of Change." The Champions of Change program is part of President Obama's Winning the Future Initiative. If anyone has spent his life thinking about our future, it's Brazelton.
Along with guiding millions of parents in raising their children, Brazelton collaborated with Ed Zigler and Julius Richmond to create Head Start, a comprehensive early education program for low-income children that, as he says, gives "every child a chance to make the American dream come ...

It's green growth or nothing | Chris Huhne :: We have no choice. High energy prices are here to stay and resource-frugality is our only hope for a sustainable futureMuch of our economic debate implies we must choose between going green or going for growth. That view may be the opposite of the truth. There is now hard evidence that the real choice is between green growth or no growth at all.For the first time in the postwar period, energy and other commodity prices are unusually high for this point of the global recovery. Normally the cost of basic materials falls in real terms for at least two years after a recovery begins. In the past, this boosted real incomes, supported spending and fuelled recovery. No more. Today there is a different phenomenon in the developed world: the "squeezed middle". Far from boosting incomes and spending, ...

Healthy Eating Hindered By Parents' Work-Life Stress :: In a tight economy, with fewer jobs, many people end up working harder and sacrificing more to stay employed. Enzymatic preparation of L‐alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine in an aqueous medium :: AbstractL‐alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (L‐α‐GPC) was successfully prepared from phosphatidylcholine (PC) of food‐grade soy lecithin powder by a novel enzymatic reaction in an aqueous medium. A 94.5% yield of L‐α‐GPC was obtained under the optimal conditions of 55 °C, 6.67 mg · mL‐1 substrate, 2 mM CaCl2, and 33.4 U · mL‐1 phospholipase A1 (Lecitase Ultra). L‐α‐GPC at 98% purity, 73.4% (wt‐%) recovery, and specific rotation () of ‐2.5° was achieved by silica gel column chromatography. Owing to its excellent catalytic efficiency, low cost, and ready availability, phospholipase A1 (Lecitase Ultra) provides a very satisfactory option for converting PC to L‐α‐GPC.Practical applications: L‐alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (L‐α‐GPC) has been st...
