Energetic study of cardioplegic hearts under ischaemia/reperfusion and [Ca2+] changes in cardiomyocytes of guinea‐pig: mitochondrial role :: ConclusionsCPG, diazoxide and clonazepam improve postischaemic recovery, respectively, by increasing the Ca2+ cycling and by reducing the mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake either by uniporter or by mNCX. The mitochondria compete with the leaky sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) as sink of Ca2+ in guinea‐pig hearts, affecting the postischaemic contractility. CPG also prevented the ouabain‐induced dysfunction by avoiding the Ca2+ overload. Ouabain reduced the synergism between CPG and clonazepam suggesting that [Na+]i and SR load influence the mNCX role. Fixing the economy, with Science! :: Former Apprentice candidate Katie Hopkins has offered solutions to the problems with the NHS. So it's only fair that someone with biomedical science knowledge offers solutions for how to fix the problems with the economy.SpotOn London 2012 took place recently. For those unaware, it's a conference focussing on "how science is carried out and communicated online". Many interesting points were brought up during it, one of which was the issue of self-promotion. The extent to which you should self-promote, and how people will react to this, resulted in a number of interesting discussions. Athene Donald, on her excellent blog, and my friend the lovely Della Thomas responded to this interesting debate in the classic scientist way by attempting to generate some data about it. However, at present, ...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

How African Men are Changing Traditional Beliefs :: Charles Kayongo of Uganda is a father of two girls aged five and three. And even though age-old traditions among his ethnic group, the Baganda, say a man should have an unlimited number of children and a son as an heir, Kayongo refuses to have more children.
Like a growing number of cash-strapped young parents in this landlocked East African nation who yearn for a modern lifestyle, he says that he and his wife, Eunice Kayongo, want a small family.
"Enough is enough. I do not want any more children. I discussed this with my wife, and we have been using pills and condoms for the past two years. The cost of food, of sending them to school and buying medication is already too high for me," the 33-year-old tells IPS from his home in Mukono town on the outskirts of Uganda's capital, Kampal...

The GM tree plantations bred to satisfy the world's energy needs :: Israeli biotech firm says its modified eucalyptus trees can displace the fossil fuel industryIt's a timber company's dream but a horrific industrial vision for others: massive plantations of densely planted GM eucalyptus trees stretching across Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and China, engineered to grow 40% faster for use as paper, as pellets for power stations and as fuel for cars. The prospect is close, says Stanley Hirsch, chief executive of the Israeli biotech company FuturaGene. All that is missing, he says, are permissions from governments for the trees to be grown commercially, and backing from conservation groups and certification bodies.FuturaGene has spent 11 years trialling thousands of GM eucalyptus and poplar trees on 100-hectare plots in Israel, China and outside São P...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Vince Cable takes on chancellor over plans for cuts in science :: Business secretary to deliver speech insisting that coalition focuses on maintaining long-term growthVince Cable will publicly call on Monday for the chancellor to drop any plans for cuts in spending on engineering, science and further education from his autumn statement. The business secretary will insist that the coalition must keep on investing for the long term rather than look to short-term fixes. In a speech he will say that spending with the potential to spark economic growth, including the money ringfenced for research in science and engineering, is a "basic minimum" to maintain the country's competitiveness.Cable will also add his voice to those frustrated at the coalition's totemic Tory target of cutting net immigration to "tens of thousands", by stating: "Being open for business m...

Nate Silver: it's the numbers, stupid :: The poker player and baseball nerd turned political forecaster won fame after predicting the result of the US election with uncanny accuracy. And as his star rises so too does that of a whole new generation of 'quants' leading the digital revolutionNate Silver is a new kind of political superstar. One who actually knows what he's talking about. In America, punditry has traditionally been about having the right kind of hair or teeth or foaming rightwing views. Silver has none of these. He just has numbers. Lots of them. And, on the night of the US presidential election, they were proved to be right in quite spectacular fashion. For weeks and months, the election had been "too close to call". Pundit after pundit declared that the election could "go either way". That it was "neck and neck". On...

'Lifestyle Diseases' Plague Indian Women :: Sreelakshmi, an office executive in a major diagnostic laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Kerala, ends her 11-hour working day to return home at night to a mountain of domestic chores.
At 35, she is already diabetic and vulnerable to disorders ranging from obesity and depression to hypertension and chronic backache.
Health experts warn that Sreelakshmi represents an increasing number of high-powered Indian working women who juggle workplace and domestic responsibilities in an effort to keep everyone around them happy, while disregarding the toll this hectic lifestyle takes on their minds and bodies.
For ambitious, middle-class women such as Sreelakshmi, hailing from a suburban area of Thiruvananthapuram, the office and the home are equally im...

Science budget cuts will threaten Europe's recovery, say research heads :: European Commission president warned that infrastructure projects crucial to the growth of member states will be hitThe heads of some of the world's leading research organisations have warned the president of the European commission that cuts to the EU science budget will threaten the economic recovery of the region.A shortfall in science funding would undermine basic training for young researchers and hit major infrastructure projects that are considered crucial for European science and the financial growth of member states, the scientists say in a letter to José Manuel Barroso. The senior figures at Europe's eight largest research organisations, including the European Space Agency and Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider, warn that protecting the science budget is "absolutely vital" f...
