With food safety bill, U.S. government will spend nearly $1 million per person to prevent food-borne illness deaths :: (NaturalNews) The recently-passed Food Safety Modernization Act, which was passed in order to prevent food-borne illness deaths in the USA, will cost $1.4 billion over the first five years. But nobody thinks about the economics of the issue. How many people are we going to save by spending this $1.4 billion, even assuming it works? To answer that question, let's look at the food illness fatality figures offered by the CDC:• Out of the 5,000 food-borne illness deaths each year in the United States, only 1,809 are "attributable to foodborne transmission" according to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol5no5/mead.htm#Table%203).• E.coli, which is often quoted in the big scare stories about food safety, only kills 78 people a year through food-borne transmission (52 plus 26, fro...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

The selling of wartime needs sold the US on advertising, author says :: (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) It's hard to imagine today, but the advertising industry once faced fierce public opposition, in the 1930s. Then came World War II, and everything changed, says author Inger Stole, in "Advertising at War." The industry helped the government promote everything from war bonds to victory gardens to women in the workforce -- while still selling products -- and in the process cemented its place in the American economy and psyche. Guest Post: Are Microgrids the Key to Energy Security? :: By Dawn Santoianni "Energy independence" is a concept that has become part of the political lexicon and touted as a panacea for a downturn economy. Recently, the concept has morphed into "energy security" which encompasses not only a domestic abundance of energy resources, but freedom from energy market manipulation. Still, there are numerous and conflicting definitions for energy security. Does energy security mean using only renewable or carbon-neutral energy resources to prevent further anthropogenic global warming? How do fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, fit into a secure energy future? One thing is certain - we know an energy security failure we when we see it...or worse, experience it. The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy was the most recent example of how vulnerable society is t...

New evidence on financing equity in China's health care reform - A case study on Gansu province, China :: Conclusions:
Health care financing policies in China need ongoing reform. Given the inequity of general consumption taxes, elimination of these would improve financing equity considerably. Optimizing benefit packages in public health insurance is as important as expanding coverage, both for health care financing and for utilization management as well. Although they are progressive, out-of-pocket payments are not equitable in China and have the effect of excluding the poor from health care as they cannot afford to pay for medical care and so withdraw from treatment.
