Guest Post: Are Microgrids the Key to Energy Security? :: By Dawn Santoianni "Energy independence" is a concept that has become part of the political lexicon and touted as a panacea for a downturn economy. Recently, the concept has morphed into "energy security" which encompasses not only a domestic abundance of energy resources, but freedom from energy market manipulation. Still, there are numerous and conflicting definitions for energy security. Does energy security mean using only renewable or carbon-neutral energy resources to prevent further anthropogenic global warming? How do fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, fit into a secure energy future? One thing is certain - we know an energy security failure we when we see it...or worse, experience it. The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy was the most recent example of how vulnerable society is t...

Lives Saved And Profits Increased By Alcohol Pricing Policies :: Setting minimum prices for alcohol increases health and economic benefits, say international experts, who met for a seminar on alcohol pricing and public health. The meeting - sponsored by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the Centre for Addictions Research of British Columbia (CARBC) and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) - focused on new analyses on Ontario and other provinces where minimum pricing policies have been implemented for a number of years. Medicare, the beloved budget buster :: The program is the single biggest factor in the deficit over the long run. But there are no easy fixes. While President Obama spars with congressional Republicans over whether to raise taxes, advocates for the elderly have been girding for a fight that promises to be at least as intense: what to do about the rising cost of Medicare, the federal health insurance program for the elderly and disabled. The program is vital to its beneficiaries, but its expenses are growing far faster than federal revenues or the economy. In fact, it is the single biggest factor in the deficit over the long run. And with multiple forces driving up costs, there's no easy way to solve the budget problems it presents. (Source: L.A. The survival of multidrug‐resistant bacteria in thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic co‐digestion of dairy manure and waste milk :: Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is considered as a promising method to manage animal waste with antibiotic‐resistant bacteria. Current research was conducted to investigate the survival of multidrug‐resistant bacteria (MDRB) resistant to three groups of antibiotics: (i) cefazolin, neomycin, vancomycin, kanamycin (group 1); (ii) penicillin, oxytetracycline, ampicillin, streptomycin (group 2); and (iii) cefazolin, neomycin, vancomycin, kanamycin, penicillin, oxytetracycline, ampicillin, streptomycin (group 3), in anaerobic digestion of dairy manure and co‐digestion of dairy manure and waste milk at 37°C and 55°C for 22 days, respectively. The population densities of three groups of MDRB on peptone, tryptone, yeast and glucose agar plates incubated at 30°C for 7 days before and after di...

Paper of the Month: U.S. Public Supports Policies to Improve Nutritional Impact of Federal Nutrition Assistance Program :: This month's paper is from Public Health Nutrition and is entitled 'Public support for policies to improve the nutritional impact of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)'. The full paper is published on Cambridge Journals Online will be freely available for a limited time.
The U.S. Congress is currently debating substantial cuts to agriculture and food assistance programs included in the 2012 Farm Bill in order to reduce the country's budget deficit.  Due to the ongoing effects of the global recession, a record 46 million people, or one in seven Americans, receive benefits to purchase food every month from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps.  The $75 billion of annual federal spending on SNAP provides a both a cr...

Longer Lives, Lower Incomes for Japanese Women :: When Hiroko Taguchi retired this past April, at the age of 64, from her job as an insurance sales agent, she joined the rapidly growing ranks of Japan's aging women who now outnumber their male counterparts.
Taguchi, a divorcee who lives alone, is heavily dependent on her pension to support what will likely be a lengthy retirement, given that women in Japan live, on average, about seven years longer than men. A survey conducted earlier this year by the Health and Welfare Ministry revealed that women account for 87.3 percent of Japan's record number of 50,000 centenarians.
"I am lucky I did not quit my job when I married, as was the norm for women of my age," Taguchi told IPS. Indeed, she is one of a very small number of women in Japan for whom old age is not synonymous with povert...

Anti-Prostitution Campaign Picks Up Speed :: In a small dingy room on the edge of a brothel in west Kolkata, capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, a 42-year-old former sex worker is trying to eke out a living selling cooked food in her neighbourhood, while tending to her sick husband and a paralysed son.
Despite the hardships of everyday life, Rubiya Bibi (not her real name), who was trafficked to India from neighbouring Bangladesh when she was a teenager, knows one thing for sure – she does not want to go back to prostitution.
Recalling the days when pimps and madams would force her to sleep with men even when she was sick, Rubiya Bibi says: "Poverty forced me to prostitution. But once in the trade's vicious cycle, I faced even more atrocities.
"I was never allowed to say 'no' to those who ran the brothels....
