With food safety bill, U.S. government will spend nearly $1 million per person to prevent food-borne illness deaths :: (NaturalNews) The recently-passed Food Safety Modernization Act, which was passed in order to prevent food-borne illness deaths in the USA, will cost $1.4 billion over the first five years. But nobody thinks about the economics of the issue. How many people are we going to save by spending this $1.4 billion, even assuming it works? To answer that question, let's look at the food illness fatality figures offered by the CDC:• Out of the 5,000 food-borne illness deaths each year in the United States, only 1,809 are "attributable to foodborne transmission" according to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol5no5/mead.htm#Table%203).• E.coli, which is often quoted in the big scare stories about food safety, only kills 78 people a year through food-borne transmission (52 plus 26, fro...

The Open and Rocky Road Post-2015 :: What values does a Yemeni journalist who fuelled the Arab Spring hold in common with a former principal of the U.S. National Security Council? And how in turn will they see eye to eye with a Jordanian queen, or the president of Indonesia?
The subjects of this riddle are meeting in Monrovia as part of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's 27-member High Level Panel of Eminent Person's on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP).
The purpose of the HLP is to lead the discussion around a new framework, the post-2015 development agenda, to replace the expiring Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The HLP's work will culminate with an advisory report to Ban in May 2013.
The meeting, which takes place between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, is the third in a series of four. Previous meetings took place in Lon...

Defending the Faith :: For researchers of all stripes, the meat-cleaver approach to tackling the United States' unsustainable deficit that has been at the center of political wrangling in Washington, DC, represents an obvious threat. Unprecedented pressure to avert fallout from spending cuts, tax rises, and other measures that will result from awkward compromises forced by the so-called fiscal cliff means that research budgets will be pushed toward the chopping block despite President Obama's stated commitment to "doubling funding for key research agencies to support scientists and entrepreneurs." Critics argue, as presidential candidate Mitt Romney did last fall, that much innovation can be fostered at lower cost by forgoing increases in government support for research and instead removing barriers to investmen...

What cost learning? :: One of the effects of the grim economic situation affecting much of the world is its potential impact on funding available for education and in particular continuing professional development (CPD). It has only in recent years in the United Kingdom has there been a move in levelling of the 'playing fields' that has seen allied health professionals getting a fairer access to CPD funding compared with the larger groupings of medicine and nursing. Unfortunately it will come as no surprise if all groups experience a fall in available funding to support learning activities as organisations tighten their belts. In 2012 the world's largest radiological conference, the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of America (RSNA) meeting at Chicago in November reported a drop in attendance of 9%...
